Communiqué Festival AKANAME 2010

Ci-dessus, extrait du festival Akaname 2008!

07/06/2010 Singing in the mountains
Fortunately the weather turns beautiful rivers descend rapidly and we can enjoy a day of good weather, climb the sides of Tatris with children. Ivan went Sherpa for four years and he knows well the corners, and roads, it takes us even in a shelter where Kesaj do a little concert, under the walkers ébailli eye.
From the above, we see the slums of Lomnica and Kezmarok!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
06/06/2010
Floods
But an unexpected event is messing up the whole program, the torrential rains are overflowing rivers across Slovakia, thousands of homes in the water, roads are blocked, electricity has been cut Kezmarok, we must put the Letanovce concert next week ...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
05/06/2010 The best of the children
We are off to Letanovce, which will host the festival Akaname.
Soon this small village at the foot of a National Park, Slovak Paradise will be destroyed, the families relocated.
Sergei make some dance steps, once the village children are runners to do the same for the festival and give the best of themselves in dance competitions and singing to be held!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
04/06/2010
Repetition
Ivan will pick up the children in the slum of Lomnica, and some trips later, the rehearsal can begin!
Caution, as always with Kesaj, energy is huge!

It must be true!
Kezmarok!!!

03/06/2010 A little coffee
And now downhill!
A little coffee to keep warm, the Tatri mountains are to be seen, proving us we are really close from the goal!
Just a few kilometers more, not time to rest !

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
03/06/2010
Montain
After some really hard hours, we finally reach the highest point of our trip, 1050 meters above sea level. This is the last day before joining Kezmarok, and it seams the weather doesn t dare being too hard on us after a full month of rain, it is dry!

Solvakian paradise
One more punction, the road going steaper and steaper, this region called the Slovakian Paradise is really something!

Dansing with rain
Despite beautyfull rain-dances after morning coffee, and sunny mood, time remains very very very humid... but we are not stopping!

Before Brezno
Our sweet friend, the rain found us again, and this rain shield is saving us from getting floaded.
As we left the bike trail Eurovelo 6, we have now to share the road with cars and trucks, but they seam patient and are not scarying us too much!
We start to see some raod signs announcing our final destination, no way we give up now, we are nearly there, we nearly managed the Rennes-Kezmarok bike challenge!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
02/06/2010
Swim and sun
It seams, as we were hiding in viena that the bad weather lost our track and we enjoyed two nearly fully sunny days. The bike are surviving bravely this hard treatment, crossing europe in wet conditions, and dispite fresh temperatures, we can t resist enjoying some nice bath!

02/06/2010 Meeting special
The cycling challenge in support of the group Kesaj Tchavé is challenging indeed! As well as having to deal with the temperamental weather, we've had to face up to doubts about our ability to complete the task in hand.
Yesterday Johann met someone – and it was one of those moments that stays in the memory for a long time. For the rest of the day, he seemed to be somewhere else, in a world of his own…
Perhaps he'll be so lost in his dream world that he won't get back on his bike tomorrow!

School french of Wien
Hosted by Jerome and Caroline Segal, we made a presentation in the French School of Viena. Students were highly enthousiastics, asked load of questions, about the Bike challenge, as much as about the Kesaj Tchave. After these interesting exchanges and two days of rest without biking, we get on track again, aiming for slovakia and Kezmarok !

Philosophy
Johann brought the book "The Way of the World" by Nicolas Bouvier with him. A particularly apt quote from the book: "A journey does not need reasons. Before long, it proves to be reason enough in itself. One thinks that one is going to make a journey, yet soon it is the journey that makes or unmakes you." Go Johann! On your saddle, we're off!

Lessons learned during the past month (May 2010)
1. A tarpaulin well fixed in place to provide shelter from the rain and a hearty fire are your best friends when it comes to spending evenings along the Danube .
2. Don't hesitate to go further than the eye sees when looking for dry wood. If you take the first few soaking twigs you find, all you'll have is a lot of smoke and cold spaghetti.
3. To cut logs that are quite big, here's an old Gallic technique invented by our friends Asterix and Obelix: throw a menhir or just a big stone and the log miraculously breaks up into several pieces. The pieces fly off in all directions after being struck with the stone, so watch out that you don't get hurt! Here are a few techniques of beating the rain:
4. The “Dutch” technique: a little bit too clean, but it doesn't annoy the neighbours in the campsite.
5. The ‘concrete' version: provides shelter from heavy showers but is unfortunately hard to carry on the back of a bike.
6. If you're unlucky enough to have to deal with torrential rain unexpectedly, try the “makeshift” version. This version may leave you asking yourself some deep and meaningful questions, such as: what a hell of an idea it was to take up this cycle challenge!

Brno in Ceska Republika

Today we are in Brno, major town of south Czech republic. Brno is a twinned city with Rennes, the base of our non-profit organisation YEPCE and also the start from the bike Challenge !

We are meeting the team of the Museum of Rom Culture, and they invite us for a tour through the exhibition from the painter Mila Dolezelova and the permanent gallery.
Then we present our project, our support to the Kesaj Tchave, future partnerships are evocated, among them programing the band, exchanges, exhibitions....

The contact was warm and stimulating, and the president of Yepce has again done great progress in the Shakespeare language !
Already the Brno museum is proposing us to support the Akaname festival with books, teaching folders and paper games, that will enrich the stock of prizes for the singing and dancing competition.

Leaving the museum, situated in one of the four quarters with rom majority of Brno, listening to this sweet czech language, we realize Slovakia is not far away anymore, the goal of our challenge is getting closer and closer, and our enthousiasm intact !

25/05/2010 Entering Austria
The german bike train ending, we cross the Donau by boat. Austria, here we come ! What a show ! The weather is becoming the chef-operator of a great long feature movie. Heavy stormy rain alertnates with romantic mist, the river goes for mysterious curves into cliffs and forrest composing sceneries as majestic as a painting from Nicolas Poussin, and even to the best 3000 pieces puzzles ! The night camp is a "grand final" a firework of colors, we feel somewhere into an aquarel from Victor Hugo ! Dare we say, this is worst Turner ! Thunder, lightenings, monster rains are composing a wagnerian symphony ! Well trained by now with this apocalyptic scenarios, holding on our tent so it doesn't become a kite, as brave sailors into the Bermuda, we have a toast and sing loud "I feel good " Sehr schön Austria!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
22/05/2010 The Bavarian Donau
The Donau has still more than 2000 km to flow before the Black Sea through Europe and we see it getting bigger and bigger everyday.
more and more water ! Also coming from the sky ! The challenge is getting into a strange mood, a cold mousson seams to stick to the project. It is falling from the sky impressive amounts of water. We learn that some regions of germany and central europe are flooded... Will we end up this bike challenge rawing to join the Kesaj Tchave ? A campsite is an opportunity to recharge mentaly, get warm again and leave next day with clean and dry clothes. Johann as he is crossing the Donau over a bridge suddenly feels christmas is getting closer, cold and causy winter nights, a sweet warm fire waiting at home. But the calendar confirms, we are not crossing the Alps skying, but crossing May and Europe by bike ! As a gift for not giving up, mother Nature offers us our most beautiful night camp into the wild, somewhere along the Donau after Deggendorf, south Bavaria. We are getting pretty efficient and despite a steady rain, we reach setting a rain shield to get the tent out of water, as much the one falling than the wet spongy ground, and a generous fire makes us forgetabout the foggy night rain. And from the fire and a bit of magic we prepare the evening diner: Alaska white salmon in it sbed of oignons and white wine with a fennikel sauce and full rice. Sweet dreams ! Tomorrow we will sleep in Austria ! What weather is to be expected....

Along the Donau River
We leave Tutlingen to discover the curves of the Blue Donau (wich isn't blue at all but brun because of the intense rain).
The way uphill yesterday under the rain, together wich winter temperatures imposed us to recover a little half a day,, and we appreciate today this beautiful river...

After some shopping in a little village store, the sailer offers us to boil some water for us to take with, and as he realizes we are french, tells us the high estim he has for the frenchies, especially for Daniele Mitterand, the wife of the previous french president, who he met in Irak where he was living before. He nearly falls crying into sebastien's arms as he evoques that great lady.
We decide to pretend as much as possible that we are the ancient first french lady to facilitate getting fresh water.

Cold is settled and intense, the end is soon there, and wet feets are not of a help, but there is not much we can do with these continues rains.... Yesterday an Irish Coffee saved Sebastien from giving up the challenge, today a village market saves us, as Johann finds for 1 euro some shoes that have the enormous advantage to be dry, and WATERPROOF !!!!
The show can go on, the challenge will be....

The following days, as the landscape flattens, we bike like nuts, doing more than 100 km a day !

But where is it they get this force after everything was ment for them to give up ! Are we biking so hard to survive from that instense cold ? Is it because we try to escape from that black clouds following us ? Is it that icy-water bath at some sacred fontain last night in the woods, or much better, may it be the sound of the Kesaj Tchave that this wind bring along, from their little rehearshall room in Kezmarok ?
Not sure, as we are still far, but Viena is getting closer fastly, but this you will know more about in our next post !

13/05/2010 From Rhein to Donau
To avoid overheating, it seams a giant air-cooler as been set upon the country, set pretty close to zero. Hopefully we took along a large plastic protecter that helps for a night in the forrest... and the day after, a giant atomizer, water sprayer, is on, our skin will keep fully humidified for sure...and as we climb uphill toward the Donau river, seams that big machine goes little Du-du, we finally reach the Donau with heavy steady freshy semi-snow fall... Here we come Donau ! We realize we will not find a campsite or cheap youthhostel in Tuttlingen, so we accept the cheapest Hotel in town... finally a dry place ! We briefly set the heaters on max and transform the hotel room in a tropical glass house, where simply all our stuff is exposed for drying from socks to tent, and Johann is preparing on the little gazstove a great diner: Ready made soup mixed with nuddles and eggs ! Just marvelous ! Good night and happy dreams !

From Mulhouse to Basel
In Switzerland, rain is good. Climat is pretty absurd but we have great fun with it ! Last kilometers in France, as we pass the leftovers from car industry in Mulhouse, we speed along the Canal toward switzerland. Basel welcomes us with steady rain, but some clearer moments are to come. For a change we even enjoy a full day without rain, followed by an impressive night... falling cats, dogs and more... We follow the curves of the Rhein river all the way to the Konstanz lake where we are supposed to climb uphill again. 09/05/2010 To Mulhouse
There we are again along the river following the Eurobike trail 6 toward the black sea. To be honnest, it is the sky that is pretty black... but excellent for the fotos, the lights are perfect ! The 8th of may started relatively soft, but as we pass Dole, we rush toward a possible hidden place to spend the night, followed by pretty impressive clouds behind. A massive rain all night is followed by a peacefull rain, and we take off again with bird songs to support us. A little brunch later, time for washing the dishes and we go again under a soft rainish grey. Rain... it seams to be pretty delighted with our project, and rain barely stopped the following days, from Besancon to Mulhouse. We camped two night in official campsites, so we got opportunity for a hot shower, dry our clothes, and keep up good mood ! Eric joins us to deliver the entry in alsace region prize, we deserve it ! By monday the 10th we have gone more than 1000 km from Rennes, half way !

07/05/2010 From the Loire to the Saone river. An inspired shortcut
Two Atominc powerplants and a few castles later along the Loire river, we decide to take a shortcut from the Euroroute 6 a bike trail from french atlantic coast to the turquish black sea, so we gain easily hundred kilometers... A great inspiration indeed.... Weather is getting colder and colder...this starting may 2010 is pretty winterish. A break at a truckdriver's restaurant and we learn drinking a hot coffee that snow is falling in Château-chinon... where we are supposed to pass by tomorrow... Alike slow, very slow snails, carrying along their life, we climb uphill the Morvan national park. At night we enjoy getting warm around the fire. Sebastien, still suffering from not having any pair of pans suddenly finds a great way to use  a pullover as pans. The third day of that fabulous shortcut as finally az clear day starts, our delighted bikers rush downhill all the way to the Saône river, in wich they enjoy a fresh but deserved bath!

Sully-sur-Loire
We wake up from a beutiful night in the woods. A short breefing, a mini-brunch, there we go again !
But one more suprise is to come, punction !
And we go again, stronger from this new experience...
But what more could happen to us?
The wind blow us strongly away, and we double the distance made yesterday...
Tonight's diner:
Steamed Montbeliard saucisses in its bed of lentilles, on oak tree fire.
Life is beautiful !

From Paris to the Loire river
24 hours delay on our schedulde and the rainiest of the month, but we remain truely optimistics !
It is 4p.m., take-off for 2000 km bike challenge!
Finaly, after 40km, to our great surprise, we are not a little wet and the night has come...
Sebastien realize he simply forgot to take some pans.
Reasonably, we decide to postpound the challenge to tomorrow. First camp in the nature.

Last days of training!
Day-3 before the start of the second and final stage of the cycling challenge. This second stage between Paris and Kezmarok is estimated at 1700km by car route website. So if we do not lose too much by looking for more country trails that highways should be less than 2000 km. Either on a month a little over 65 km average per day ...
I do not know Seb that I found my training tomorrow, but these days puts me in Spain with confidence!

Quick report

Note that the intense physical preparation for our two crazy ray...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
15/04/2010 And Sébastien ?
Barely 24 hours after crossing the Atlantic, Sebastien has now started his training for successful Bike Challenge to Slovakia with Johann... But the pressure is already high and accumulate several problems: jet lag, nostalgia is understandable in the Amazon rainforest yaa he left just 48 hours, the preparation of thunder Johann who has just succeeded in two jiffy to cover first 500 miles, wind and cons, and only a portion of the course difficult, Rennes Longnes. For all these reasons made it necessary for Sébastien into overdrive and is already testing the limits of resistance of these calves and bicycle. After 5 km, is the disaster, the shifting ... and the brave cyclists are left without survival gear ...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
13/04/2010 The end of the first part of this travel. Arrival in the country of Paris!
Johann Longnes reached after following the Loire then having crossed the plain of Beauce, Chartres, central forest Carnutes where druids liked to meet regularly. The wind was contrary, but morale was good. Without doubt he heard the songs Gallic tell her old stories of our ancestors.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
12 et 13/04/2010 Amboise - Meung sur Loire - Chartres
This morning on waking. I stuck his head out and happy surprise, it's nice!
I decided to go back to Paris a little before Orleans. My goal for the day is to continue along the Loire to the fork of a municipal road that goes north. So tomorrow I will have to reach Chartres and I am almost there at Seb.
It's 7:30 and there was already a good breeze. The wind will certainly stand up and blow yesterday as 50km / h. A hard day ahead!
I have some demands of deadlines, appointments to Paris the next few days, so I decided to advance all costs. My bike is now very stable and pumped up, my muscles are now accustomed to the effort there is no reason to let me do by this wind!
The fight is uneven but still I keep a good pace and I get to Blois for lunch or I give myself a nice little restaurant worker.

Then without a moment I restarts. Spent the evening I give myself a camp at nightfall.
Early wake up to Chartres.
Always the damn wind. I had better put myself in windsurfing!
The last few miles along the Loire I meet a nuclear plant. How strange not to use the wind in this region! Seeing the strong current of the Loire is also wondered if there were no innovative projects in terms of energy to lead!
It's finally in the afternoon I discovered the Aeolian of Beauce in the hour or I will perdentt crosses in the mist.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
11/04/2010 Rigny Ussé - Amboise

This morning I woke up early enough to catch the delay time on the schedule I set myself. It takes me more than 2:30 for any retreat, prepare the bike that I had to fix yesterday. The attachment of the luggage rack broke under the weight of my paquettage. This is often where it breaks as some friends had warned me. With a rope I nurture this bond. This temporary increase will finally to Paris.

During the trip, I meet again the gypsies which I offer baskets.
The second time I am arrested, I stopped to chat.
I explain this evidence that I have no room to bring baskets to Slovakia by cons I propose to take a picture to show children how to live Kesaj Tchave gypsies in France.
I still do some portraits at the request I will send them in digital photo and then I restarts.

After tours, I go with the aim of arriving at Blois. The wind is strong and I still dee front. I must redouble efforts to maintain a suitable medium.
I realize that my flat tire coming out of Tours. I reinflates hoping that it was under the influence of weight that the pressure has changed, but after a few miles, you must give me the evidence is indeed dead. it is 18:30, I decided to stop at Amboise in the camp to fix what is not for me who am not very handy small matter. Note that on this bike much focused on the rear wheel. (Coaster brake, speed in the hub, to remove anti derail ...)

At 22:30 I finished tinkering. A hot meal, a shower and a good night's sleep because tomorrow I have the road!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
10/04/2010 Saumur - Rigny Ussé
You can not joke with stretching! Before every effort quarter of an hour of heating. The little slagging morning

After having to leave Peter returns in Angers, I continue my journey. After a few miles the wind we had yesterday from the front has turned. Owl allows me to advance more quickly by continuing along the Loire. Unfortunately after a few kilometers I realize that I'm lost. The stream that I read is not the Loire and I head for almost qu'1heure south! So I fight for two hours against the wind that has put on weight since yesterday to get back on track!
I cross the landscape stretches of vines on the side of Saumur Champigny and small picturesque villages with architectural formwork. Along the Loire troglodithes houses and wine cellars are carved into the limestone.

In late afternoon I pass a trailer which encourages me a couple of gypsies.
I decided to stop for a short break. I explain this challenge bike. Alfred himself was sedentary in this area that lends the town hall. When he was a nomad, he had 6 horses. Then he had to sell at as and because he could no longer feed them. Today, it continues to sell baskets at the side of the road.

Was a good meeting but I just drove today I decided to leave but even under the blessing of Alfred I realize that will not arrive in Tours tonight.
I always pedal against the wind to the castle of Sleeping Beauty (so say the signs for tourism) and is close to the castle Rigny Usse in a field that I ride my second camp before sunset. Good night!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
09/04/2010 Angers - Saumur La loire by the véloroute. This route runs along the European waterways from St Nazaire to Bucharest!

This morning flint was tried in vain to repair the part attached to the handlebars that can stretch the cable to the next gear but she really blew up. Fortunately we found the missing piece in a bike store.
The seller is happy to find this piece is no longer done. The Netherlands 3 speed bikes in the hub it is more fashionable it seems! That's nice, it takes away a sacred bone of the foot. I could not see how 2000km with a single speed!
In addition Peter is my intention to accompany me on a piece away.

It is easier with the organization. The camp is quickly mounted. Peter prepares a fishing line for dinner...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
08/04/2010 Laval - Angers
along the river the Mayenne

Early morning, beautiful weather. Pleasant route along the Mayenne.

You meet beautiful mansions castles, manors, farms managed and Romanesque churches.

There also crosses many horses and even a fellow on a bike!

The end of the trail becomes really rustic.

The last ten kilometers will be quite laborious. These are only fields to push through somehow the bike with passages of delicate barriers...

Two hours of endurance punctuated by encounters with heifers so excited that I managed to keep their distance despite determinations. A well-deserved break at Pierre enable me to regain some strength and get my bike. From Laval, I can not change gears ... Cheers!

07/04/2010 And it is the departure from Rennes to applause.
Out of reindeer with a few hours late on my schedule, I attack my first day of cycling. Destination Paris or Sebastian waiting to continue the Challenge bike!

This course warm-up, Rennes Laval, is quite hilly. It's a good workout. Regular breaks allow me to regain strength. The weather was overcast but no rain and no wind, conditions are ideal.
Small snag, I have great difficulty moving speeds ...
